Defining the Foundation of How You Lead

Even experienced leaders can struggle to define leadership. And it’s hard to lead effectively when you’re not exactly sure what leadership is.

How do you define leadership? After working with new managers and leaders for over a decade, I’ve discovered that even experienced leaders can struggle to define leadership. And it’s hard to lead effectively when you’re not exactly sure what leadership is.

Leadership is the ability to guide, influence, and inspire individuals or groups toward the achievement of shared goals or a common vision.

A leader is someone who provides direction, makes decisions, and motivates others to perform at their best. Leadership involves not only possessing specific skills and competencies, but also embodying qualities such as integrity, vision, empathy, and effective communication.

Leadership can manifest in various contexts, including business, politics, community organizations, sports, and more. Effective leaders often demonstrate the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances, foster collaboration, and cultivate a positive and inclusive organizational culture. Leadership is not solely about holding a formal position or title; it can emerge at any level of an organization, community, or home.

Leadership styles vary, encompassing traits such as transformational, servant, authoritative, democratic, and more. Successful leaders are often characterized by their ability to understand the needs and motivations of their team or followers, make informed decisions, and create an environment that promotes growth and success for the collective.

Once you’ve clearly defined leadership, you can better refine your leadership. And sometimes, you’ll need to collaborate with an expert to help identify the gaps and create strategies to fill them.
