Rising from the Ashes of Trauma Through Post-Traumatic Growth

Have you ever experienced a traumatic life event that left you feeling completely shattered? Without denying deep distress, post-traumatic growth involves using adversity as a catalyst for transformation.

Have you ever experienced a traumatic life event that left you feeling completely shattered? I sure have. How did you get through it? What lessons did you learn? Did it leave you stronger than before?

Without denying deep distress, post-traumatic growth involves using the challenges and adversities you’ve faced as a catalyst for personal development and positive transformation.

If you’re currently traveling through your healing continuum and are wanting to cultivate growth after trauma, psychological research indicates that post-traumatic growth can, in fact, co-exist with post-traumatic stress. If you’re not quite ready to cultivate growth at this time, that’s equally ok.

Whether we’ve completely healed or are in the midst of our healing journey, whether we have the support of a therapist or are in a season of solo reflection, here are 5 ways we can harness post-traumatic growth:

1. With support as needed, strive to process the experience once you’ve had space from it. It’s nearly impossible to evolve in the middle of a crisis, but reflection in its aftermath can provide a foundation for growth.

2. As a survivor, explore how the traumatic experience changed your mindset.

3. Investigate whether you appreciate life in a new way.

4. Evaluate whether your relationships have deepened.

5. Explore whether you embody a new sense of spirituality.

Remember that post-traumatic growth is a unique and individual process. It’s about finding your own path to healing and transformation. Be patient with yourself, embrace the journey, and focus on the positive changes that can emerge from adversity.
